Birdwatching in Vellamelen

Vellamelen Fuglefredningsområde (Bird Reserve) is located in the innermost part of Hjellbotn close to Steinkjer. You will find birds in Vellamelen all year round. However, the spring migration is spectacular. Thousands of Pink-footed Geese and other birds are gathering here in this period. Looking for the occasional Taiga Bean Goose or Greater White-fronted Goose among these will probably put your patience to the test. A little easier to find is the Barnacle Goose among the many Canada geese. Nortern Pintail, Garganey, Nortern Shoveler, and Greater Scaup are seen once in a while, so be meticulous when searching the area with your telescope. Generally, you will find a good variety of ducks, waders, and geese in Vellamelen. From time to time, rarities are also registered here.
