Birdwatching in Valdresflye
Valdresflye is located in the eastern part of Jotunheimen. This high mountain area is very easy to access, with Beitostølen as its nearest village. District road 51 between Beitostølen and Vågåmo will take you straight through a wonderful high mountain landscape at approximately 1400 metres above sea level. The road is normally closed in the winter, from December through April. You should be aware that there are domesticated reindeer in the area.
Great Variety of Mountain Birds
In Valdresflye, you can find almost every single one of the Norwegian mountain species. The easiest way to get started is to park your car in the large car park where the hostel used to be. From there, you can walk in direction of the moorlands and small waters around Fisketjerni, where you will find ducks and waders like Scaup, Purple Sandpiper, and Red-necked Phalarope. The peak Fisketjernnuten is also worth hiking your way up to. The view here is spectacular, with exciting bird species surrounding you, adding to the experience. All of these species can be found in the area: Long-tailed Jaeger, Rock Ptarmigan, Eurasian Dotterel, Horned Lark, Lapland Longspur, and Snow Bunting.
Just a 5 kilometre drive north of Fisketjernnuten, you will arrive at a great willow landscape. Here, among other species, Great Snipe, Bluethroat, and Ring ouzel can be found. Also worth mentioning is that many people camp out in the open in this mountain region.
